After reading and some time for discussion of the character, have students look at the evidence and notice any patterns. Brainstorm Claims, Evidence, and Warrants Now that students have a better understanding of claims, guide them through developing their argument with claims, evidence, and warrants.
Students sometimes construct a weakly supported or poorly reasoned argument because it is, after all, their opinion, and they have a right to it. The claim that typically answers the question: Summarizes arguments, suggests solution and ties into the introduction or background.
A statement of their point of view, plus three reasons to support that point of view.

If you are teaching a simple argument essay, the list of pros should be longer than the list of cons.
They may not understand that a thesis can point to conflicting claims or raise a question. Your students should assume that the writer disagrees with the positions they are taking on their topic but they should not assume that the reader unintelligent.

Informal Argument, Not so Freestyle Once students have argued without the support of any kind of research or text, I would set up a second debate; this time with more structure and more time to research ahead of time.

They do not reliably challenge the writers they are reading.
Students can mistake argument for opinion, writing papers that are subjective and self-gratifying rather than objective and reader-based. At this time, I also show them a model of a piece of writing that meets the requirements of the assignment.
