Picking up the five-paragraph essay format sometime in the future will be an easy task for any Writing and Rhetoric student.
However, since my boys are approaching middle school age, I felt I really needed to do something about their writing skills. In the end, it is a creative, classical and easy curriculum to teach writing!
When my son is stumped about how to write a paragraph, I simply read him one of writing and rhetoric reviews sample paragraphs so he can get an idea of what his should sound like. Their multiple modality approach to classical subjects, such as Latin, has been an essential element to my homeschool.
And that is a beautiful thing. However, I recognize that it may not be for everyone. Variations of the five-paragraph essays are great for efficiently demonstrating what you know on an essay test, but beyond that, have little use in the real world.
My son is dysgraphic and writing was painful, laborious, and frustrating. She is also a Harry Potter fanatic, enjoys line dancing and Zumba, spends hours scrapbooking, and loves organic vegetables.
She begged me to do it and worked through three revisions of it without a single complaint! My sons are fourth and fifth graders this year, but with their writing difficulties this level is perfect for them.
They take turns reading each fable out loud to me. My husband and I were amazed, and humbled, at how much was stored up in that little mind of his, just waiting to come out. This is the only program in 6 years my 6th-grade son has not cried and he even said today that he likes it. For the first time in our homeschool career, we are all actually enjoying writing time.
The boys, Mom, and Dad, along with the two guinea pigs, live in Northeast Ohio. There is so much that I admire about the program. I enjoyed working on those stories.
